Jer
Jeremy G. Hamm originates from the
Lincoln County, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario. Jer grew up playing country
and bluegrass with his grandfather (Cousin John Goertzen of the Lincoln
County Peach Pickers), singing traditional gospel in church, and playing
classical music in the Niagara Youth Orchestra. In his spare time,
he attempted ramping his car over various train bridges in the area.
In 1997, Jer moved to Winnipeg to study music, which he did for a
time before embarking on his own adventures out West. He now lives
with his wife, Jess and their two ankle biters, Sofia and Nicholas,
in downtown Winnipeg.
Jer
has a knack for being the jack in the band; he plays fiddle and mandolin,
helps out occasionally on guitar and bass, sings whenever he can,
is the band’s soundman and lends a fabulous critical ear. Jer
is an accomplished luthier and has built a large number of various
stringed instruments; from mandolins to guitars and to fiddles - including
the fiddle that he plays on stage. His taste and feeling for bluegrass
music are an essential part of the Doug and Jess bands' sound. When
asked about his devotion to bluegrass Jer simply states, "I grew
up on bluegrass, it'd be foolish if I didn't play the music. Kinda
like rejecting Mom's cooking ".
